where do ideas come from

Having  a studio to work in is okay, but I just collect stuff like this old door frame. Why in world did I bring it back to my studio for? Or even say "yes, I will take it" ?
I have no room at my studio for any more stuff,  but it's like well, it's cool old wood ...hmmm yea right.

So ok, I have to do some thing with it or throw it out... hhmmm ...throw it out.

Well I had a new art  model, Angie, coming into the studio. So once she was here and we chatted, I realized she was up for some of my odd ideas. So I screwed the door frame to my floor on it's side, and then got Angie to follow my direction in creating a shape to contrast with the frame. Well I forgot  to say I only had half a door frame.

Angie so talented and easy to work with. Plusshe could hold the pose where she is hanging downwards, so I could change the lighting.

We created some really cool images. Just love her shape in contrast to the straight wood of the door frame.

And yes, I have used it again - So I do not feel too bad having dragged it back to studio...

"Where did you shoot that?" Was the question

I get asked this about some of my work many times: "Where did you shoot this?"

I shoot mostly in my studio. So, I am always looking for a way to create an idea. As much as I like the beach, swimming and surfing, plus watching the sharks swim by, I needed to create this in my studio.

I do not normally keep my test shots of an idea once I have worked it out. This is one such idea that I found so have posted it.

First, these are some of the images I created:

 

So this is one of my test shots of how I created them.

The whole image is the test shot - just look at it and you will see the top half is what you would see as the image when I shoot it, but the model is sitting in a plastic tray to catch the water when she stands up. That is a sheet of plastic stretched out in the middle of the picture. It is taped to the walls in my studio with a 2x4 across the front. The models goes in under the plastic and comes up through the hole in which the model stands up in. So we can spray her with water and catch it in the tray she is standing in. It worked well for what I had in mind.

I hope this helps those that have asked or just wondered, but I am not a writer and this is the best I can explain  for now. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask and I will try my best to answer.

I created some ideas for an in house showroom for Scooters  at my studio.

Edie was my assistant, as well as doing wardrobe. 

A very busy fun day with two models, and Rachel doing makeup.

Model Peter was just a great guy. Had a great photo shoot with him.

I know my makeup artist did enjoy it  - as she had to put oil on his body.

I am sure I saw a smile on Peters face.

Just so lucky to work with so many creative makeup artist.So as I find time will put more up, these are ones that I have worked on in photoshop. No reason - just wanted to.

  The makeup artist are using colour. My choice is just to show these.

Just love this idea created by Rachel (makeup artist):  No eye brows.

I get to work and watch so many creative and talented people at my studio; it's like a paint box of magic.
Even though I do show a lot of my work in black and white, I really appreciate their work, which will be on their websites or blog, in stunning and beautiful colour .

Art Deco Art Nouveau

I do notice in some of my work a lean in the direction of Art Deco and may be Art Nouveau style.

 

I am very interested in line and shape, but never seem to know where to go with it. I just love the journey and the way it makes you think. I hope I never get to the end of this journey.  

 

So I just keep trying different ideas out. Thank goodness I have many model friends that put up with my odd ball ideas and work with me, so I can continue creating images. I never seem to have a reason. It's just a 24/7  journey into the unknown and the discovery of ????

I enjoy shooting new baby's with their Dad. This was one such a shoot. It was during this shoot that I was just watching the baby as her dad was softly talking to her.

I was so ready  if she opened her eyes, and then she did, and looked straight at me. I shot it and she closed her eyes and went back to sleep.
It is so worth it when you get a shot like this.

No wonder I love what I do.

Gun shot and muzzel flash with the actor Ermal Williamson

This shot was created for a John Wayne concept, with the actor Ermal Williamson, who was recreating scenes of John Wayne.

It did not take to long too work out the timing and we got the shot muzzle flash and all.
Did not need photoshop for this.
Later, some one said I could have used a sound censer to fire the flash. NOW THEY TELL ME!!!

but what I did think of was: my studio is in a complex, with a restaurant and many people walking by, and Ermal must have fired 8 blanks of in my studio. They where loud, made my ears ring, and the Police Station is only a mile away... yet no one complained or came to see what was going on. I guess it's the world we live in. Don't get involved. At the time I did not think any thing of what we where doing - only after talking to friends.
        

Flower made of gold

I was asked to shoot this flower for a Client / Collector. He just said to be careful with it.

After the shoot, he said it was hand-beaten out of gold sheets and hand formed into this flower. He said don't ask what it costs.
It did not look like gold to me, but then again, I do not collect gold so I am sure the are many colours of gold.

Just a very beautiful hand made flower.

lighting test

This was a product test for another photographer who was doing a writeup on lighting and asked me to use this product to see if I could create my style of lighting.

The lighting was using white umbrellas. I have not used these for a long time. What I did find was they spread out a lot of ligh. I just had forgotten just how much as I use soft boxes and barn doors.

this first image is just one large umbrella and lots of light.

The only way I could get close to what I wanted to see was to flag and block the light plus use the edge of the umbrella to control the light. It was hard work and very time consuming.

Well I must admit, I did  get very close to what I normally see and created some of the shadows I wanted.
All lighting has its own  use, but narrow soft boxes and barn doors are my choice for most of my work.

The model was Brett, who let the makeup artist put this mud stuff on her and wrap rope around her neck and arms. She probably wondered what this shoot was all about. I told her it was about texture and shadows. I just love models that are very beautiful, yet know it is not about them but the concept.

This was a test shoot for a sports bra company. So I had two athletes come in to test out the idea.
It was so much more fun and creative than I thought it would be - as the models really got into the idea.

So here are some of our test shots.

the Sofa , a journey in erotica ,

For the past two years, I have photographed many models on the sofa in my studio. When I began to see the amount of images I had, another book was born.

So here are just a few with  Irish model Juchi ,who was on a trip here in California, and came in to shoot with Nichole.

The idea was two girls photographing each other. When I spoke to Juchi on the phone, it was like she was from another planet, I did not under stand a word she said. Yet I was born in England and have spoken to many Irish people... mmmm ??

When she came in it, was much easier to understand her. I could just lip read her lol.

She is just an amazing model, lots of energy and just had a nice way about her. Plus she and Nichole just hit it off, so I new it would be a great shoot.

Nichole is a model that just has it all: beautiful, a stunning body, and is just a super nice person.
So how could I miss with such a great combination with these two models???

I gave some direction because of the lighting I was using, but they knew what I wanted to see. So here are some from the book.

some times you meet a model that is more than a model

Some times you meet a model that is more than a model . She is a visual model - to be seen in movement.
What do I mean by that?

Well I meet Lucie when she worked with another photographer at my studio and I noticed the way she was constantly moving.

She explained that she loved Video as she could create different moods, etc. and keep moving.
So I agreed to work with her on a video project, which she wanted to create, and we would both use it.

I would shoot some video footage and some still shoots so she could edit and create a  black and white  video with different moods.

She is a very talented beautiful model and very much gets into the mood of the idea, such as these, which  have a more sensual side.

These are some of the still shoots from part of  that shoot which I love very much.

but alas there is no video. So sad but true, she just did not follow through and get it done.
